Humanities and Human Sciences

Building the future through the power of words

A major feature of the Graduate School of Humanities and Human Sciences at Hokkaido University is that research and education are conducted in a way that connects fields that belong to the humanities, such as ideology, history, and literature, with fields in the category of human sciences, such as psychology and sociology. Taking classes in a field from another major while enjoying advanced education in your specialized field will enable you to take a more holistic and objective view of your own research. We aim to be a place from which new possibilities can grow by having both fields of study coexist in one place.

The Graduate School of Humanities and Human Sciences has two major divisions of study. These are the Division of Humanities and the Division of Human Sciences.

In the Division of Humanities, students can study the humanities comprehensively and across disciplines. We also have courses that can only be studied at Hokkaido University by taking advantage of Hokkaido’s regional characteristics, such as Slavic-Eurasian Studies as well as Ainu and Indigenous Studies.
In the Division of Human Sciences, students can study comprehensively about humans and society. Students can learn about advanced empirical learning based on world-class research that makes full use of our past experience in large-scale research projects, as well as a diverse range of research methods that includes experiments, practical training, and fieldwork.

Two major divisions of study consisting of 11 diverse courses and 20 laboratories. Over 100 faculty members are available to support the in-depth and flexible education of our students.
