Living in Hokkaido

Hokkaido is a treasure trove of fresh, locally sourced food and stunning natural scenery.

Hokkaido University is located in the large city of Sapporo; with a population of 1.9 million, it has plenty of things going on all year round. Not only that, but the beautiful nature surrounding the city is sometimes just a short bus, train ride, or even walk away.  Add the inexpensive cost of living, and it's no wonder that Sapporo is ranked the number 1 place to live in Japan. By all accounts, it's hard to imagine a better place to experience university life.
Let's take a closer look at what Hokkaido is like.

What is Hokkaido like?

Clothing expenses

There are many reasonably priced clothing stores (like UNIQLO) and second-hand shops in Sapporo, so you won't have to worry about purchasing clothes. Sales on the Internet and Garage Sales held on campus are also popular. For western sizes and name brands at a discount, outlet shops (like Mitsui Outlet Park) can also be accessed by bus from Sapporo Station.

What kind of clothing is required in Sapporo?

You may think that Sapporo has a lot of snow, but that doesn't mean it's cold all year round. Please use the information below to see what kind of clothing you will need.

In summer, you can wear short sleeves, but you may need a jacket to cope with the temperature differences in the morning and evening.

In winter, as it is bitterly cold outside but well-heated indoors, attire that can be taken on and off would be desirable. Please see below for recommended clothing. (external site)

There are also eight school cafeterias on the Sapporo campus, three restaurants, and two convenience stores, so many students opt to eat on campus. Of course, some students bring their homemade lunch boxes and eat in their laboratory, etc. In addition, you can find many reasonably priced restaurants near the university so you shouldn't have any trouble finding something to eat. For the convenience of our Muslim students, the school cafeteria also provides halal food.
